Erika Raum is well-known as a violinist but years ago, she had thought to enrol at the University of Toronto in the composition department and actually completed one term before her playing engagements became too numerous for her to continue. During that time, however, she wrote a number of works including The Confessions of St. Augustine for Solo Horn which has become a regular recital piece and is included on Music by Women on the Affetto label performed by Howard Wall of the New York Philharmonic.
The Fanfare for Brass Quintet was written as part of her application to be accepted into the composition department of the University of Toronto.
